We would like to cordially invite you to our Global Digital Cultures Soirée, which will take place on Wednesday, 22 May, 2024, between 18:00 and 22:00, in Claire's Ballroom at Kapitein Zeppos

The speakers this time are Paola Ricaurte Quijano (Tecnológico de Monterrey), Emiliano Treré (Cardiff University) and Gabriel Oliveira Pereira (UvA), who will discuss Algorithmic Antagonisms, Resistance and Coloniality of Power. Each speaker will present their thoughts on this topic from a different angle. 

Paola Ricaurte is an associate professor in the Department of Media and Digital Culture at Tecnológico de Monterrey and faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Alongside Nick Couldry and Ulises Mejías, she co-founded Tierra Común, a network of academics, practitioners and activists interested in decolonizing data. She is a member of the <A+> Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms and leads the Latin American and Caribbean hub of the Feminist AI Research Network, f<A+i>r. In addition to her academic work, she participates in civil society initiatives to promote digital rights,  the development of public interest technologies, and the dissemination of the ecosocial impacts of technological development.

Emiliano Treré is a Reader in Data Agency and Media Ecologies and Director of International Development at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture. He’s a widely cited author in digital activism, critical data, AI, algorithm studies and digital disconnection with a focus on Latin America and the Global South. He co-founded the ‘Big Data from the South’ Initiative and co-directs the Data Justice Lab. His monograph Hybrid Media Activism (Routledge, 2019) won the Outstanding Book Award of the ICA Interest Group ‘Activism, Communication and Social Justice’. His co-authored book Data Justice (Sage, 2022) was the runner up of the Sage Social Justice Book Award. His latest co-authored book, Algorithms of Resistance (MIT Press, 2024), explores collective forms of power, agency and resistance in the platform society. Gabriel Pereira is Assistant Professor in AI and Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on critical studies of data, algorithms, and digital infrastructures, particularly those of computer vision. His research methods are interdisciplinary and collaborative, including both forms of qualitative research and practice-based inquiry (e.g. artistic interventions and critical making). Projects with Gabriel have been exhibited in venues such as the 33rd Sao Paulo Art Biennial, the Van Abbemuseum, IDFA DocLab, and Itaú Cultural. After brief presentations from these scholars, the floor will be open for questions and comments from participants. 

As always, our soirées involve food and drinks; the evening will start with drinks, and dinner will be served around 20:00. Attendance is free of charge.
